(Almost) all the wants... It's just... I don't like that thin reflector bar thing connecting the taillights... Is that some ugly federal regulation or an intentional design cue?

It's not a reflector bar it's an actual light, a design cue used to represent AWD.

huh, I did not know that!

It's intentional. Porsche usually has that strip on their AWD models. The 997.1 AWD models didn't have it. But the 997.2 AWD models did. It's an actual light, not a reflector bar.
I'm with you. I've never been a big fan of that strip. Though I did see an AWD 991 in person for the first time the other day. I did like that strip a lot more on the 991 than I did on earlier cars. The combo of it being thin and LED makes it kind of cooler than it was in the past.
What bugs me more about the strip is the reflectors above the exhaust tips. Those are federally mandated I believe. There should have been an exemption for cars with LED tail lights. They look really silly on this car since it has LED tail lights and a light strip. The chances of all that dying at the same time is really slim.

I believe it's a reference to past 911s.
Although neat, IMO it didn't work very well on the 997 either.

Here is how it looks at night

Yeah they don't bother me whatsoever on the older models but yeah, the newer ones just don't do anything for me.

I, for one, love the strip.

The 996 4S also had them

The reflector is for when parked and no lights are on.

I'm really starting to warm up to the 991's strip

honestly my favorite application of it

My friend walked into my room while I had this on my computer, and he was like, "Is this person talking about the silver bar across the roof? I don't like it very much either."
And I was like SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

the silver bar is sex-tactic, I fucking love it. I don't even care how much extra weight the overly sophisticated roof retracting mechanism is, I'd have this over a cabrio any day of the week, all day long.

I heard our friend BlazinAce likes strips, as well.

What about when the car is off. Those reflectors come in handy on a dark street or driveway.

ok now i'm converted
i am liking the strip
but just on the 991. i still don't like the 997 with the strip

I now realize the folly of my thinking!

Some cars (US models at least) have reflectors integrated into the taillight housings themselves.
The lower bumper reflectors are actually an EU requirement. Same goes for side marker lights (integrated into the front fender on the above 911), and the requirement for rear turn signals to be both amber and independent of the brake/stop lights.

that is good info, thank you!
That's smart that some of the reflectors are built into the tail lights themselves.

Hmm it does look kinda better on a black car than a lighter color car
